MAREMMA SHEEPDOG
Also known as: Cane da pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese; Maremma, Abruzzese, Maremmano, Maremmano Abruzzese
HISTORY BRIEF: The Maremma Sheepdog is an Italian livestock guardian dog which has been used to protect the flocks for over 2000 years, especially from the wolf. The Cane da pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese (the literal english translation of the name is "The dog of the shepherds of the Maremmano and Abruzzese") is an old breed, the "Canis pastoralis" a white sheep guardian dog, described two thousand years ago in ancient Roman literature by Columella, Varro and Palladius. The Maremma-Abruzzese sheepdog has never stopped working because the wolf has never disappeared from the central Italian Apennine Mountains, thus making it necessary to continually use the dog to protect livestock.
DESCRIPTION: The Maremma is a large white or cream colored dog who is lithe and is a big, strongly built dog of majestic and rather rustic appearance. Females: weight 66-88 pounds; height 25.5-26.75 inches. Males: weight 77-99 pounds; height 25.5-28.5 inches. WORKING CHARACTERISTICS: The Maremma Sheepdog is considered a close-in, or nurturing, guardian. Maremma, like all guardians, are more nocturnal in nature because that is when the majority of predators are active. They routinely patrol bark throughout the night to let predators know they are on duty. Maremma become very bonded with their livestock, and with their family; however, they are typical of LGD breeds in that they are not obedience-minded and very independent. Maremma are considered one of the smaller LGD breeds, with well socialized individuals having lower reactivity to strangers than others, while taking their duty very seriously. |
HEALTH: Maremma Sheepdogs are subject to certain genetic and hereditary diseases and should be screened for these conditions before breeding. Please click the links below to learn more.
