KARAKACHAN
Also known as: Karakachan Dog
HISTORY BRIEF: The Karakachan breed is named after the nomadic shepherds of Thracian origin who are the oldest inhabitants of the Balkans. Due to their conservative stock-breeding traditions, they managed to preserve some of the oldest breeds of domestic animals in Europe - the Karakachan sheep, the Karakachan horse, and of course, the Karakachan Dog.
DESCRIPTION: Females: weight 88-114 pounds; height 25-28 inches. Males: weight 99-125 pounds; height 26-30 inches. WORKING CHARACTERISTICS: The Karakachan Dog breed exhibits a diversity working ability, temperament and size because there may be a variety of sources. In temperament the Karakachan can range from dominant to more submissive, as well as having variable reactivity. Owners report that the dogs are less inclined to wander, should be less reactively aggressive to people, more measured in response, and devoted to stock. The club does not recommend the dogs for companion homes. Dogs from Bulgarian Shepherd (which are now a separate breed and bred to a different standard) lines can be larger and more reactive. |
HEALTH: Karakachan are subject to certain genetic and hereditary diseases and should be screened for these conditions before breeding. Please click the links below to learn more.
