KANGAL
HISTORY BRIEF: The breed is named for the Kangal District of Sivas Province in Central Turkey where it probably originated. The majority are bred by villagers who take great pride in the dogs' ability to guard their flocks of sheep and goats from such traditional predators as the wolf, bear, and jackal.
DESCRIPTION: The Kangal Dog is a large, powerful, heavy-boned dog, whose size and proportions have developed naturally as a result of its continued use in Turkey as a guardian against predators. The Kangal Dog has a double coat that is moderately short and quite dense. The Kangal Dog has a black mask and black velvety ears that contrast with a whole body color which may range from light dun to gray. Females: weight 90-120 pounds; height 28-30 inches. Males: weight 110-145 pounds; height 30-32 inches. WORKING CHARACTERISTICS: Kangals are more people oriented than some other LGD breeds and well suited to life as farm and family guardian in addition to a fulltime LGD. They are moderately reactive in defensive aggression , but also extremely serious in work and enthusiastically attack predators, large and small, including large birds. They often choose a high spot to observe their animals and regularly patrol. They are more active at night, often sleeping through much of the day. They can work in packs of known dogs, although they can be strange dog aggressive. |
HEALTH: Kangal are subject to certain genetic and hereditary diseases and should be screened for these conditions before breeding. Please click the links below to learn more.
