CENTRAL ASIAN SHEPHERD
Also known as: CAS, CASD, Alabai, Asiat, Aziat, Sage Koochee, Kuchi
HISTORY BRIEF: Central Asia Shepherd Dog (CAS) is one of the most ancient breed of dogs. They were formed as a breed from natural selection during more than four thousand years in the vast territory, which spreads nowadays from the Caspian Sea to China and from Southern Ural to Afghanistan. Its heritage is from the most ancient dogs of Tibet, Cattle Dogs from various nomad tribes’ dogs that are closely related to the Mongolian Shepherd Dog and the Tibetan Mastiff. The CAS were mainly used to protect cattle, caravans and the owner’s dwellings, and being exposed to rigid natural selection. Hard living conditions and constant struggle against predators have had influence on the shape as well as the dog’s character and it has made it strong, fearless, and taught it to save its energy. In the places of primordial habitation, the CAS were used mainly to protect herds from predators and also as guard dogs.
DESCRIPTION: The Central Asian Shepherd (CAS) is a very large, muscular, Mastiff-type dog. Docking of the tail and ears is optional. The dense coat comes in two varieties, long and short. The coat comes in a wide variety of colors. The CAS should be rugged in type with big bones, a large chest and wide back Females: weight 88-143 pounds; height 24-27 inches. Males: weight 121-176 pounds; height 27-32 inches. WORKING CHARACTERISTICS: The Central Asian Shepherd Dog (CAS) has a style that is of very forward active defense. They use an escalating scale of aggression starting with a bark and charge. CAS will readily engage a predator but will not pursue it if it flees past their given boundary (which should be the fenceline if you're in North America!). CAS will use lethal force if necessary. They will defend against human intruders (stranger averse), but are slower to bite a human than they are an animal predator, usually resorting to body slamming or muzzle punching instead. CAS will defend against aerial predators. They can be very dog aggressive with strange dogs, and are highly territorial. They are not as cuddly with stock, but are handler soft. CAS are very slow to mature. |
