ARMENIAN GAMPR

HISTORY BRIEF: Historically, the 'gampr' was the dog that was part of the lifestyles of the inhabitants of the Armenian Plateau, the Caucasus, and surrounding areas. Historical evidence shows the development of livestock and companion dogs to have been in existence on the Armenian plateau before other ancient civilizations. Armenian shepherd dogs originated 15,000 years ago, when people first began to domesticate cattle, sheep and goats.
DESCRIPTION: Armenian Gamprs are ideally able to perform their duties reliably because they have not been bred for appearance. Any color is permissible, except blue eyes or eyelids lacking dark eyeliner, and pink noses. The thick coat of the gampr is excellent protection in all weather extremes. There are varieties of Gampr and they come in 3 coat types. Gamprs have strong, muscular bodies with large bone structure. Females: weight 60-95 pounds; height 23+ inches. Males: weight 85-115 pounds; height 25+ inches. WORKING CHARACTERISTICS: The Armenian Gampr can take longer to mature, with maturity being closer to 3 years of age. They are very quick to dispatch trespassers, with a higher end defense drive, but they can be a more responsive to their owners. Gamprs require an experienced owner with fair and strong leadership skills. |
